For All: Accessibility Standards for the New Web by Katherine Lynch

I presented this one-hour session at the eduWEB Conference 2009 in Chicago in July, 2009.

Abstract:

The W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 were released as an official recommendation in December 2008 for designers to use in developing sites so that all users have a fair access experience.  These guidelines include specifics for aiding users with disabilities covering limitations of vision, hearing, speech, movement, cognition, photosensitivity, and learning. Recent studies have shown that about 20% of web users have one or more of
these disabilities. This presentation will provide a short, recent history of web accessibility as it evolved from an afterthought to a major requirement. It will also highlight important aspects of web accessibility best practices for coding and content. It will also address the new WCAG guidelines as they apply to academic websites and what universities can do to ensure all patrons have fair access experiences.
