Thick, Rich, and Accessible: incorporate dynamic content, scripting, and media accessibly
Tue, 6 Jul, 2010
I presented this 1-hour session at DrupalCamp Chicago in June, 2010.
Abstract
One of the biggest challenges for making websites accessible is incorporating rich and dynamic content or actions. Working things like video, AJAX-heavy streaming data, and non-traditional mouse-and-keyboard actions or controls into a site has long been regarded as casting accessibility to the wind. In this session, techniques for appropriate integration, setup, and uses of rich content for accessibility will be shown. Attendees will learn how to incorporate the following into their modules, themes, and sites:
- Audio and video
- Slideshows
- Javascript- and AJAX-reliant content sources and applications
- WYSIWYG interfaces
- Drag-and-drop interfaces
- Auto-refreshing content displays
Presentation outline:
- Rich content accessibility roadblocks
- Best practices for rich content accessibility
- Using ARIA – when, where, and how
- Ensure accessible streaming
- Testing rich media accessibility
- Common bugs and problems with rich content integration, and how to fix them
