Theming Views: get it to "look right"

I presented this 1-hour session at DrupalCamp Chicago in June, 2010.

Abstract:

Views is used by a vast number of Drupal sites, but theming Views to match your site’s theme, to break out of a restrictive module’s look, or to stand out as unique content, can be tricky. In this session, attendees will learn several techniques for theming Views and Views elements, and will be able to evaluate what techniques are appropriate any given theming situation.

Attendees will learn about the following techniques:

  • Views template files – when to use them, to what granularity, how
  • Template suggestions – incorporate views into custom modules, and give theming back to the designer
  • CSS tricks – quick and easy tips for improving and integrating default Views into your site’s current theme
  • Working with plugins – how to theme what’s available, when to write your own
